Accidents, Illness and Medical Matters
We have staff who are qualified in First Aid who are able to deal with most of the minor injuries that occur at Nursery. Sometimes we do have more serious accidents and in these circumstances we will make every effort to contact parents or carers. However, the welfare of the child is our first concern and it may well be necessary to seek immediate hospital treatment, whilst at the same, attempting to contact you. Please inform us at the start of the session if your child has had an accident at home. Therefore it is vital that we are kept informed of where you can be contacted in an emergency, especially if you go out to work during the day. Please inform the Nursery immediately of any changes that effect this information. One day your child could urgently need you.
Other up-to-date contact names and telephone numbers are also important. Please do not bring your child to Nursery if he/she is already feeling unwell or showing signs of physical upset. Invariably these children need to be sent home for his or her sake, or the sake of the other Nursery children. If there is any doubt in your mind about your child`s health, it is far better to keep him/her at home for a while, or visit the Doctor. If your child becomes ill at Nursery we will notify you and ask you to collect your child as soon as possible. A list of childhood diseases and their exclusion periods can be found in the Policy Folder which is in the entrance.
Administration of Medicine
We are only able to administer medicines that have been prescribed by your child`s GP. Please don`t ask the staff to give children over the counter medicine. If your child needs medicine while in the Nursery you will need to complete a medication form at the beginning of each day and to sign it when you collect your child to ensure that you are aware of the medicine given to your child on that day. If your child has been prescribed antibiotics they should be absent from Nursery for at least 48 hours and then only return to Nursery if it is absolutely necessary.
Calpol- Whilst it is acknowledged that Calpol is very effective at reducing children`s temperatures (for example- when a child is teething) it is, however, also very good at masking symptoms when there may be something more seriously wrong with a child. Because of this it is our policy not to hold bottles of Calpol in Nursery for children even if it has been prescribed. We will only administer Calpol to treat the specific problem for which it has been prescribed.
Child Protection
We are required by law to inform the relevant agencies of any concerns that we have about a child who is or may be at risk of harm. Should this occur you would be informed by the nursery Manager of our concerns and the actions to be taken. Nursery staff will then support you and your child in anyway possible. All of the Nursery staff have received Child Protection Training and this is updated regularly.
Head Lice
If you find, or suspect that your child has head lice (or the eggs, often known as nits) please let the Nursery Staff know. Be assured that anyone can catch head lice and it has nothing to do with “dirty hair”. In fact, head lice prefer clean hair (but they don`t like combs). Please see your local chemist for information on dealing with head lice.
